Join The #SydneyDoesntSuck Campaign

Words by Stephanie Aikins

You, the Australian bartender community and the drinks industry more broadly, have been championing the banning of plastic straws for some time now.

Finally, it seems our governments are catching up, with the City of Sydney this week announcing #SydneyDoesntSuck, a city-wide campaign urging small bars and major venues alike to stop the use of plastic straws.

Instigated by City of Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor Jess Miller, #SydneyDoesntSuck has been created in response to the 10 million straws used by Australians each day and the 3.6 billion straws used nationwide annually.

A number of notable venues have already signed on to the cause, including the International Convention Centre, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Solotel Group’s Opera Bar and the other Opera House precinct bars.

The Opera House precinct’s involvement alone will save more than two million single-use plastic straws from ending up in landfill or our oceans.

“As a symbol of modern Australia, we feel it’s our responsibility to lead by example and encourage all of Sydney to support Sydney Doesn’t Suck. The Opera House is one of the only World Heritage buildings to achieve green certification internationally, and we’re passionate about building sustainable thinking into everything we do,” said Emma Bombonato, Sydney Opera House Environmental Sustainability Manager.

Sign your bar up as a member venue for free here or follow the campaign via social media at the #SydneyDoesntSuck hashtag.
