Lonely Planet Has Just Revealed the Top Coffee Shops in Australia

Words By Stephanie Aikins - Drinks World Editor

Everyone’s must-have little blue travel guide, Lonely Planet, has just released its Global Coffee Tour book ($29.99), which includes all of the top coffee shops and roasteries in our little corner of the world. Find out where and what Lonely Planet had to say.

Exchange Coffee: Adelaide

“Having trained at Workshop in London, owner Tom Roden opened the doors of Exchange Coffee in mid-2013 with a view to offering the best coffee experience for Adelaidians. Little did he know that the South Australian capital was about to undergo a massive coffee revitalisation and Exchange Coffee would become the benchmark for the others to follow.”

Shops 1 & 2, 12-18 Vardon Ave,
Adelaide, SA 5000
Tel: +61 415 966 225
Web: www.exchangecoffee.com.au
Opening Hours:
Monday-Friday: 7am-5pm
Saturday: 8am-4pm
Sunday: 9am-4pm

The Cupping Room: Canberra

“Be Prepared to queue for a table at Canberra’s best café as it’s well worth the wait. Local speciality roaster Ona Coffee set up the Cupping Room as a concept café with an educational component, but customers pour in for the exceptional food, laidback vibe and excellent coffee.”

1 University Ave, Civic,
Canberra, ACT 2601
Tel: (02) 6257 6412
Web: www.thecuppingroom.com.au
Opening Hours:
Monday–Friday: 7am-4pm
Saturday-Sunday: 8am-3pm

Villino Coffee Roasters: Tasmania

“You could easily miss Maker when walking by – it’s tucked behind a roller door among a bunch of warehouses down a residential back street – but you don’t want to. Owners John Vroom and Stephanie Manolis once ran tiny Ora in neighbouring Kew, which served some of Melbourne’s best cafe food – seasonal ingredients sourced and cooked with loving attention to flavour, texture and presentation. At Maker, they have focused that passion on roasting and brewing some of Melbourne’s best speciality coffee.”

47 North St, Richmond,
Melbourne, VIC 3121
Tel: (03) 9037 9037 4065
Web: www.makerfinecoffee.com
Opening Hours:
Monday-Friday: 7am-3pm
Saturday: 8am-3pm
Sunday: Closed

Telegram: Perth

“Telegram’s bossman and chief barista Luke Arnold has a reputation for perfection. So much so that fans have followed him as he’s ground, frothed and poured at different locations around Perth, before opening his eucalyptus capsule in 2015. His coffee beans, like the telegrams of old, connect to all corners of the globe.”

Inside the State Buildings,
Cnr St Georges Tce and Barrack St,
Perth, WA 6000
Tel: +61 8 9328 2952
Web: www.telegramcoffee.com.au
Opening Hours:
Monday-Friday: 6am-4pm
Saturday & Sunday: Closed

Mecca: Sydney

“A mecca is a place that attracts a particular group of people with a particular interest. The group attracted to Mecca Coffee has been worshipping these roasts for more than a decade. Outlets can be found in Circular Quay and at this Alexandria hub, which has the added benefit of great food thanks to Mecca CEO Paul Gesho’s association with Brickfields, the Chippendale corner bakery much-loved for its European bread, tarts and pastries.”

26 Bourke Rd, Alexandria,
Sydney, NSW 2000
Tel: +61 2 9698 8448
Web: www.meccacoffee.com.au
Opening Hours:
Varies per venue, check the website.
