Meet Ruth!

Jun 18, 2021

Meet Ruth!

Tell us a bit about yourself – how did you get into hospitality?
After working in retail management for the bulk of my younger years. I was craving a change of scenery, originally just went into it for an in between role. Ended up loving it and never left.

How did you find yourself in this role?
With determination, support from my seniors and ambition to grow. Starting as a bartender 5 years ago, I put my hand up for staff recruitment and training suggesting there was a gap of this at the time. I then saw a gap in our social media and again, suggested this is something I could do and grow. Finally, when the position of Marketing Manager arose senior management encouraged that this would be my next step and I love it!

What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened on shift?
Too many stories, couldn’t think of one. From falling down the stairs whilst carrying 10 pizzas for a function and wearing them all to one of my fave security guards misjudging the door handle and walking straight into it. There has been so many funny memories!

COVID-19 had a huge impact on the hospitality industry. What have been the main challenges for you during the past year? How have you learned to overcome them?
When we were closed, doing nothing was pretty wild! Not good at sitting still made you really appreciate all the moments were you feel really stressed. Take them over sitting on the couch waiting for things to open back up any day.

What do you think will be the biggest game changer in hospitality over the next 5 years?
Technology – people’s patience is getting smaller and smaller. Hard to ensure you are giving great customer service and still being quick and efficient. The ideals of what good customer service is will eventually adapt and change.

What do you love most about working for the group?
The culture, it is a fast-paced growing environment, I have learnt so much and keep learning every day.

What do you love most about working in your current venue?
The events that we organise at Hotel Steyne are always fun – It is a place with endless potential, so I get a chance to be creative. I also love the locals at this pub, it is a real family feel.

What do you love most about your current role?
Being creative, coming up with ideas for venues, going to different venues and getting perspectives and ideas from everyone.
I love coming up content creation and trying to figure out ways to drive business through social media engagement.

What do you love about hospitality?
It never gets boring!
