Barcats has partnered with William Angliss Institute to bring this globally recognised wine qualification to Melbourne, taught in a single day inside the iconic Angliss Restaurant.

What you will learn

WSET Level 1 is built for total beginners. Across one focused day you will move from feeling unsure about the wine list to confidently talking about styles, grapes and pairings. The course covers:

  • The main types and styles of wine, from sparkling and white through to red, rosé, sweet and fortified
  • Common grape varieties and the flavours they bring to the glass
  • How to store and serve wine the right way, including temperature and glassware
  • The principles of food and wine pairing that work in real venues
  • The WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine, the same framework used by sommeliers worldwide

Who WSET Level 1 is for

This course is designed for anyone new to wine study. It is a fantastic first step for hospitality staff who want to grow into floor, sommelier or beverage manager roles, baristas and bar staff branching into food service, retail wine and bottle shop team members, and enthusiasts who simply want a structured way to learn. There are no entry requirements. You only need to be of legal drinking age to participate in the tastings.

Tasting samples are provided as part of your enrolment, in line with WSET's official specifications. If you do not pass the exam on the day, a resit can be booked for $120.
