What is St-Germain?
Mar 16, 2019
Every truly great French luxury brand became great by being thoughtful about, and obsessed with, every single detail. In 2007, Rob Cooper, a third-generation distiller, worked with some of the world’s top bartenders to create St-Germain. It was an exciting innovation in a tired liqueur category, lovingly referred to as “Parisian Life in a Bottle.” It has a reputation for elevating just about any cocktail you mix it with.
Elderflowers are a tiny, starry white flower which only blossoms for a few fleeting weeks each Spring. As St-Germain uses only fresh elderflowers (never dried or frozen like some other brands) the harvest is rare and valuable. The fresh flowers are then macerated in hot water (softening or breaking into pieces using a liquid), the recipe is a closely guarded secret however. The result if a 100% natural elderflower extraction that gives the liqueur its unique, fresh flavour. Unlike many competitors, no preservatives or stabilisers are used. This means that the pale golden colour of St-Germain may naturally darken over time.
Each bottle is stamped with its unique number, with the last 2 digits denoting the vintage year of the harvest.
St-Germain is a curious and remarkable balance of flavours giving the liquid a fresh, captivating flavour of elderflower reminiscent of tropical fruits, peach, pear and citrus with hints of honey suckle. Others have attempted to approximate its flavour, but none are willing to put in the amount of work and care to even come close. St-Germain is the original, the classic.
To enjoy a St-Germain spritz, head along to one of these partner bars in the month of March.
