How to: Nail your first job interview
Apr 04, 2023
So, you're about to embark on the exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking journey of job hunting. Congratulations! This is a huge step towards independence and adulthood. Whether you have been to one or 20 job interviews, they can still seem daunting everytime. Don't worry; we’re here to give you some tips on how to do just that 🦾.
1. Dress to Impress
First and foremost, you want to look like a million bucks, even if the job you're interviewing for only pays minimum wage. This means wearing clean, professional clothing that fits you well. Avoid anything too revealing, too casual, or too flashy. You want the interviewer to focus on your skills and personality, not your wardrobe. See our recent article “How to: Dress for Success” for more details.
2. Do your research
Before the interview, take some time to learn about the company and the position you're applying for. This will show the interviewer that you're serious about the job and have taken the time to prepare. Plus, it'll give you some talking points during the interview. Especially try to find some of the company values to try sneak in as buzzwords.
3. Practice makes perfect
Speaking of talking points, be sure to practice your answers to common interview questions. You don't want to be caught off guard when the interviewer asks you to tell them about yourself or why you're interested in the job. Unfortunately we cannot totally predict what questions will be asked, but here are some of the most common;
- Why do you want to work here?
- Why do you think you are suitable for this role?
- What do you know about the company?
- Why should we hire you?
- Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
- Tell me about what you did in your last job?
Think about your strengths, weaknesses, and past experiences that make you a good fit for the position.
4. Being early is being on time
When the big day arrives, arrive early and bring a copy of your resume. Being punctual shows that you're responsible and respect the interviewer's time. Plus, having a physical copy of your resume shows that you're prepared and organised.
5. Be yourself
Cheesy we know, but remember, the interviewer is trying to get to know you, so be yourself and let your personality shine through. Be sure to make eye contact, smile, and speak clearly. Don't be afraid to ask questions or clarify anything you're unsure about.
So, there you have it, some tips on how to nail your first job interview. Remember, the key is to be prepared, confident, and professional. You got this!
