Oct 18, 2023
‘I love being able to jump between venues at the moment, expanding my knowledge through the experience of others as well as being able to upskill and really drive the leaders of the future.’ says Jordan Gabriel, Training Coordinator at The Sporting Globe.
We’re proud to share that Jordan is this month’s employee of choice as nominated by the Signature Hospitality Group! Get a glimpse into how his experiences shaped him into earning this recognition with our interview with Jordan below:
Tell us a bit about yourself – how did you get into hospitality?
I got into the excitement of hospitality from Year 11 by completing my VET certificates in Hospitality at school. I then decided to continue my studies heading into a Bachelor of Business majoring in Tourism & Hospitality to focus on a path towards teaching and training in hospitality.
How did you find yourself in this role?
I have been working with The Sporting Globe for over five and a half years, starting as a bartender, working into management, and also supporting the opening of new venues interstate. The job of Front of House Training Coordinator came up and I decided to take the step and jump into a company role, supporting venues across Australia.
What do you love most about working in your venue?
I love being able to jump between venues at the moment, expanding my knowledge through the experience of others as well as being able to upskill and really drive the leaders of the future. I thoroughly enjoy working within Operations to drive positive customer experiences.
What skills have you developed since working in this role?
The ability to manage time effectively, with quick turnaround times for training sessions, as well as the ability to present information and data to the wider group. Additionally, I have developed a better understanding and skill working with team members across the country adapting to their preferred way of coaching.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in hospitality with The Sporting Globe – Signature Hospitality Group?
Who doesn’t love Beer, Food & Sport all in one stop? We’ve been driving the implementation of training programs for all team members, new and existing with the ability to upskill and lead into a management development plan. The bond between our teams is unreal, it’s rare to see coworkers hanging out, outside of work - but it’s definitely a great social growth skill meeting all kinds of people, including some lifelong friends!
What changes in the hospo environment/culture have you noticed over time?
Ever since the changes to a digital world, customers are changing and adapting to the new norm of ordering online. I believe it's created a separation and divide between a hospo worker and customer, with the social factor almost flying out the door. It’s definitely something we drive, ensuring our customers get to hear a spiel or two, plus a bit of banter over the bar for their footy team losing!
What do you love most about working in hospitality?
It’s the people you work with for sure, and the food & drinks too! But seriously, I have made the strongest friendships over the years. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of working with has made my experience better, making it exciting and fun!
