Why Is There Sugar In My Beer?
Sugar is essential when it comes to making beer.
The first stage of brewing involves sugars being extracted from malted barley, in some circumstances cane sugar is added to finesse the taste balance of the beer.
With sugar being so such an important ingredient you may ask yourself why you see such low sugar content on your beverage label. The answer is yeast!
Here is the breakdown of the sugar breakdown:
-ADD YEAST: To begin fermentation yeast is added to the brew.
-SUGARS ARE FERMENTED: This is where you say adiós to the sugar as it's consumed by the yeast.
-DELICIOUS BEER: The result of this wonderfully simple breakdown is delicious beers. The yeast and fermentation produce alcohol, carbon dioxide and your wonderful beer flavours.
Forget Preservatives!
Why don't we want preservatives in our beers?
Preservatives are substances added to your beer with the sole purpose of prolonging the products shelf life. It's a totally unnecessary step which is why the majority of your favourite beers like One Fifty Lashes, SuperDry and XXXX are completely preservative free.
There are two reasons why it is unnecessary to add preservatives to beer.
REASON 1: Alcohol and Hops (the spice of beer) are both natural preservatives which help to keep beer fresher for longer.
REASON 2: The hygienic conditions and packing technology that breweries use today to handle beer prevents bacterial contamination
